Thailand’s famous New Year Songkran Festival is a vibrant three day celebration from 13th to
16th April each year, and coincides with the New Year of many calendars in South and
Southeast Asia. “Songkran” is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning to “move into” and refers to
the orbit of the sun moving into Aries. It marks the end of the 12 month cycle and the beginning of a new solar year. While in modern times the festival has been fixed, historically
Songkran was a movable feast, being celebrated when the sun moved into the Aries portion of
the zodiac.
For Thai people Songkran is a time to clean the home and start afresh, visit and pay respect to
elders, make sacred offerings at temples, give alms of food and new robes to monks, and
participate in Buddha statue bathing rituals by gently pouring fragrant water to bring good luck
and prosperity. Songkran is also referred to as Thailand’s “Water Festival” and is famed for its
street water parties, which offer refreshing water throwing fun at the hottest time of year.
