Known as the 'Day of Silence', Nyepi is Bali's New Year celebration which sees the entire island go quiet for 24 hours. While the day before Nyepi is a festive affair filled with ceremonies, during Nyepi the island shuts down - businesses close and all inhabitants stay inside.
In traditional Balinese culture, it's believed that spirits descend on the island on this day. Since everything is closed and silent with no people to be seen, the spirits are tricked into thinking the island is empty and will leave to let the Balinese enjoy another year in peace.
